Start with the situation
A website launch has stalled because each person thinks someone else will check the final list. You need a named person and a clear task. The word “teamwork” alone cannot tell anyone what to do next.
A possible exchange
Who’s checking the final list?
Maya is responsible for checking it. She’ll send it to Leo by Wednesday.
Who will explain any unresolved issues at the launch review?
Maya will. She’s accountable for the final list.
Why this works
“Responsible for” commonly identifies a duty or area of work. “Accountable for” highlights being answerable for an outcome. Their meanings overlap, and organisations use them differently. This is a distinction to check in context, not a universal rule that only one word is correct. A person can be responsible for carrying out a check while another person is accountable for the overall decision.
Connect the new expression to language you already know: “Maya checks the list” tells us the action; “Maya is responsible for checking the list” names the duty; “Maya is accountable for the final list” highlights answerability. These sentences have related purposes but are not mechanically interchangeable. After “for”, use a noun or an -ing form. “Accountable to the project lead” identifies the person to whom an explanation is owed.
Change the condition and try it
A designer prepares a slide deck, a researcher checks the figures, and a manager approves the final presentation. Explain each role in plain English first. Then use “responsible for” or “accountable for” only where it adds a useful distinction. Include when the handover happens.
Try a spoken or written response before checking it. Did you address the changed condition? Could the listener identify the next step? The model is not the only acceptable answer.
